Styling a Bedroom: Beyond the Bed

The bed is the centre of the bedroom, but a bedroom with only a bed in it, however beautiful, feels unfinished. A place to sleep rather than a room to be in. The difference between a bedroom that just functions and one that feels like a genuine retreat is everything around the bed, the seating, the surfaces, the details that make you want to spend time there.

Styling a bedroom beyond the bed is about supporting everything a bedroom is actually for, resting, dressing, reading, a quiet moment away from the rest of the house. Here is how I do it.

The bench at the foot of the bed

After the bed itself, the single most transformative thing you can add is a bench at the foot of it. It finishes the bed visually, a horizontal counterpoint to the headboard, and stops the bed reading as an isolated object dropped in a room. It also earns its place, somewhere to sit while dressing, somewhere to lay out clothes, a spot for a throw or a bag.

The Blenheim Bench, clean and fully upholstered, sits quietly at the foot of the bed without competing with it, ideal where calm is the priority. The Chepstow Bench, with its solid Ash frame and fixed bolster cushions, has more architectural presence and holds its own with a statement bed or stronger features. Either, in a fabric that relates to the bed without matching it exactly, lifts the room from functional to considered.

A chair in the corner

A comfortable chair in the corner changes the whole character of a bedroom. It gives you somewhere to sit that is not the bed, a spot to read, to have a quiet coffee, to sit while you put your shoes on, and that turns the bedroom into a room you spend time in rather than just sleep in.

A softly enveloping chair is perfect here. The Pembridge Chair, with its curved back and arms that wrap around you, is the natural choice for a bedroom reading corner, the kind of chair to cosy up in with a cup of tea and a good book. In a faux shearling or a soft boucle it brings a tactile warmth that reinforces the sense of retreat.

Where space is tighter, a smaller chair like the Colville Chair gives you the same thing in a more compact form, paired maybe with a small ottoman to make a proper little seating spot in the corner.

Layer the textures

A bedroom that feels like a retreat is almost always rich in texture. The interplay of different surfaces, a boucle bench against linen bedding, a velvet chair, a wool throw, natural timber, creates a warmth and depth that a room of uniform surfaces just does not have.

And it does not need colour. A bedroom worked entirely in soft neutrals can feel deeply luxurious if the textures are varied enough, the matte softness of linen against the depth of velvet against the loop of boucle. Choose the bench, the chair and the soft furnishings for how they feel together, not just how they look, and that is what gives a neutral bedroom its richness.

Do not ignore the surfaces

Bedside tables, a chest of drawers, a small table by the reading chair, the surfaces are where daily life happens and where the room's character shows in the small things, a lamp, a stack of books, a vase, a tray. Treat them as part of the styling rather than pure necessity and the room lifts.

A small ottoman or footstool doubles as an occasional surface beside a chair, or somewhere to rest a book or a tray. The Sloane Ottoman, tailored with its box-pleat form, works beautifully for this in a bedroom, and its versatility means it can move around the room as your needs change.

Light it for atmosphere

A bedroom needs layered lighting for its different moods, a bedside light for reading, a softer ambient light for winding down, maybe a lamp by the reading chair. One overhead light leaves a bedroom flat and utilitarian no matter how good the furniture is.

The furniture and the lighting have to work together. A reading chair needs a light beside it to actually be useful. Think about the two together and you get a room that feels considered and holds the quiet, restful mood a bedroom should have.

Making it a retreat

A bedroom becomes a genuine retreat when it is furnished beyond the bed, a bench that finishes the arrangement, a chair that invites you to linger, layered textures, considered surfaces, atmospheric light. Each one turns a room for sleeping into a room for living, which is what a bedroom should be at its best.

Have a look at the benches, lounge chairs and ottomans to plan the pieces that will complete your bedroom, and order swatches to see the textures together in your own room. Want help with a scheme? Get in touch.
